The Disease to Please

In a recent post on People Pleasing Pastors, Craig Groeschel lists four characteristics:
- People pleasing pastors take most criticism personally. Any suggestion feels like a personal attack. We become overly defensive and resentful of even mild corrections.
- People pleasing pastors have an extraordinary fear of rejection. If someone questions our motives, doesn’t like a sermon, or leaves our ministry, it can throw us into a depressed tailspin.
- People pleasing pastors find it hard to express their feelings. Because we have to “please people,” we don’t feel safe expressing our true feelings and needs.
- People pleasing pastors have a hard time saying “no.” Because we want to make people happy. We often over-commit. Although we are outwardly agreeable, we are often inwardly resentful.
Although I'm not a Pastor, I admit it this one smacked me in the face big time. How often have I been guilty of doing exactly the same things?
He ends by stating, "I want to ask, 'What will God think?' more often than I ask, 'What will they think?'”
I don't know about you, but I'm no longer willing to be a people pleaser, especially when pleasing others, keeps me from pleasing God.
My intention's set. And I'm asking, no I'm begging the LORD to cure me of this Disease to Please.
How about you??

Interesting timing. I have done such a 180 in this area with SO many things in my life and oh the relief!
Right now I have a couple of things that I am strongly convicted of and the truth of it is when I follow through as God is leading me it is likely not going to make a lot of 'people' happy.
Say a prayer for me that in all ways whatever I do or speak will be in love...His love.
I have been plagued by this dreadful disease most of my life and it STINKS! But, about 5 yrs ago, God began His work in my life to change this around. It has taken much time and alot of patience from Him.....but, I'm in such a better place because of it.
Love,
Fran
I have this disease:( Working on it!
Wow! that's pretty powerful! And you know what? I too am alot like that....and then too if something is said, or a suggestion, etc. is not received with "open arms", I react alot the same way.
You're right. It should be our focus to please God, not people. I've got a lot to work on!
Thanks, Cheryl.

Oh, sister, this is ME 101.
But the Lord is humbling me. And it is good! Thank you so much for sharing, I needed to hear this!

I've known this for years. The fear of rejection is what I struggle with most. I'm slowly learning that God's approval is all I need. It's a tough one though (and feels a bit lonely at times) but I know God is the only one I need to worry about pleasing. Thank you for adding that verse. I've known it was in there, but just not sure where to find it. You are not alone on this one!
Much love,

Hey I would agree about Kirk Cameron's acting... He did such an awesome job in the movie.
A inside peek into the movie. The scene where Caleb kisses his wife at the end. The movie team actually flew in Kirk's real life wife because he said that he would never kiss another woman but his wife... Isn't that cool?
love love love craig groeschel. just another example of tellin it like it is.
